Editorial Policy

Editorial standards, specification verification, and corrections policy for The Reel Authority.

Last updated: October 26, 2026

Fishing advice online often repeats generic claims without checking the underlying mechanics of the tackle or the regulations on the water. This Editorial Policy explains how The Reel Authority (thereelauthority.com), a publication of Viking Trading Group LLC, researches, verifies, and updates every article, rigging chart, and gear comparison on the site.

1. How We Source Tackle & Rigging Information

Every technical guide and product comparison on The Reel Authority is built from verifiable primary sources rather than rewritten marketing copy:

  • Manufacturer Engineering & Spec Sheets: We pull exact gear ratios, inches per turn (IPT), drag ratings (in pounds), spool capacities (monofilament and braided line), rod power/action ratings, and sonar transducer frequencies directly from official manufacturer documentation (Shimano, Daiwa, Abu Garcia, Penn, Ugly Stik, Garmin, Humminbird, Lowrance, and others).
  • State & Federal Fisheries Agencies: Articles covering public fishing access, dam tailwaters, seasonal water temperatures, catch-and-release handling, and state-line licensing rules cite state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Fish and Wildlife handbooks, USGS stream gauges, and NOAA tide and water temperature stations.
  • Transparent First-Hand vs Research-Based Disclosure: When our founder or contributors have fished a specific rod, reel, or rig on the water, we note that personal experience directly. When a gear review or comparison is compiled from manufacturer specifications, schematics, and verified owner reports without in-house testing of that specific model, we state that clearly in the introduction.

2. Accuracy, Measurements & Printable Reference Charts

We require concrete numbers across all of our guides. Rather than advising anglers to use “heavy line” or a “fast reel,” our editorial standards require specifying pound-test ranges, leader diameters in millimeters or X-ratings, rode scope ratios (such as 3:1 to 7:1 for kayak anchoring), and retrieve speeds in inches per handle turn. Many of our technical guides also include downloadable PDF reference matrices and checklists designed to be printed or saved offline on your phone before heading out of cell range.

3. Pricing & Affiliate Link Compliance

Retail tackle prices fluctuate daily. To avoid displaying stale or inaccurate pricing, we do not quote static promotional prices as current unless verified in real time through the merchant’s API. Affiliate links never influence our technical criteria or our pros-and-cons assessments. See our Affiliate Disclosure for complete details.

4. Corrections & Updates Policy

When a manufacturer releases a new generation of a reel or fish finder, or when a reader alerts us to a typographical error or regulation update through our Contact Us page, we verify the change against the primary source and update the article and its downloadable PDF chart promptly.
